Midlife hits differently when you are the person others turn to for stability.

And if you’re navigating perimenopause on top of everything else, it is not just a personal chapter. It is a leadership chapter. Midlife can make the strongest woman doubt herself.

This season reshapes how you think, feel, decide, speak, lead and relate. And most women are navigating it silently.

The Perimenopause Reality for High-Performing Women

Let’s name it plainly and without shame. Midlife for women in leadership can feel like someone sprinkled peri-peri seasoning onto your nervous system without warning.

Some days, you’re lemon and herb, steady and functional. Other days, you’re extra hot, your internal thermostat playing roulette, your brain fog improvising like jazz, crying next to the hummus then delivering a brilliant keynote two hours later.

This is not incompetence. This is not weakness. This is biology and psychology rearranging themselves. 

And it shows up in leadership in very real ways.

As Wise Power (a brilliant must-read!) describes, midlife is not a decline. It is an initiation. A passage. A stripping back to what is true.

Why This Matters in Leadership Rooms

Perimenopause never stays in the body. It spills into: communication, strategic clarity, presence, relational dynamics, culture, energy management. 

And when women don’t have support, organisations lose: more burnout, more self doubt, less creativity, less resilience, less emotional range and responsiveness. 

But when women are supported, something extraordinary happens.

Leadership gets stronger, sharper, cleaner, not despite midlife, but because of it.

The Reframe, PERI as a Leadership Upgrade

I’ve been exploring this stage for years, personally and professionally. One of my superpowers is reframing, so I took the word “peri” and gave it seven new meanings.

Here’s one of them: PERI as peri-peri, because this season is not mild. It is spicy. And spice is information.

Every hot flush is heat pointing to what needs attention. Every emotional wave is a message. Every bout of exhaustion is a boundary calling your name. Every spark of clarity is truth rising through the noise.
